Hurricane Melissa Recovery
On October 28th, Hurricane Melissa—the strongest storm ever to hit Jamaica—brought catastrophic devastation. This Category 5 hurricane resulted in catastrophic devastation.
The road to recovery will be long and daunting
The impact has been overwhelming:
- Homes Destroyed: Tens of thousands displaced, with many still living in emergency shelters.
- Infrastructure Crippled: Roads, hospitals, and water systems suffered massive damage, isolating communities and leaving many without electricity or clean water.
- Economic Devastation: Losses are estimated in the billions. Agriculture alone has sustained over J$29.5 billion (US$184M) in damage, threatening food security for over 70,000 farmers.
- Humanitarian Crisis: Forty-five confirmed deaths and more than 350,000 people urgently need shelter, medical supplies, clean water, and psychosocial support.
- Our children are facing critical risks: Thousands are out of school, and many are being taught in temporary spaces with no electricity, no running water, and inadequate conditions—while returning to homes that are equally unsafe.
Aligned with our mission to support early childhood education, we aim to adopt 2–3 elementary or primary schools to help restore stability for children. Your contribution will help to fund:
